Luke Torian Explores Alternative Means of Transportation

Prince William County residents spend about an hour each way commuting to and from Washington, D.C. for work. Luke believes time on the road could be much better spent with your families. This is why Luke supports a balanced transportation system of targeted road improvements and public transportation alternatives, including the Virginia Railway Express (VRE), OmniRide and bus rapid transit.
With a Democratic President and Congress, Luke believes Prince William County has an historic opportunity to secure federal funding in order to help pay for new alternative means of transportation, such as a commuter ferry boat service and extending Metro to Prince William County.
In his support of a balanced transportation system, Luke joined VDOT officials, Prince William County Transportation Department officials, members of the county Board of Supervisors and approximately 75 other Prince William County passengers on May 6 as they participated in a ferry boat test run during a ferry boat feasibility study.

The ferry boat study looks at the demand and impact of having a commuter ferry boat system in Prince William County in order to determine its viability. The timed test run started at the Occoquan Harbour Marina, one of four proposed starting points for the ferry, and stopped at various points along the river before reaching Washington, D.C. According to the feasibility study, each ferry boat would have the capacity to transport about 150 passengers for approximately $7 each way, a price comparable to the current price of the VRE.
Luke is optimistic about the prospect of the commuter ferry service becoming a transportation alternative for Prince William County residents. It would be a transportation alternative that helps to reduce time spent on the roads while providing a scenic route for commuters.
